The client asked me to produce a promotional animation for a new arts weekend that is being organised by Progress Festivals. Progress Festivals have asked me to have a themed character included as the central part of the animation. The themed character that I decided to choose was a magician.

All my animations were sourced and used from Vecteezy; my magician and background was fairly easy to find as it had the magician the background that I wanted, which was a theatre. I decided to have a theatre as the background because due to the fact it is a festival, I believe that my performers would be performing in a theatre, so I wanted to replicate that image. This is the vector I found on Vecteezy, however I adjusted it and changed some colours of the theatre and the magicians outfit.

The narrative of my animation is fairly simple; it is a magician that stands at the centre of the theatre and moves his wand to supposedly do a 'magic trick' to the audience, but really he showcases the different performances that will appear in the Progress Arts Weekend Festival. He shows, music notes, pain drawing a squiggly line, a scroll for a poet, balls that juggle and instruments, until he moves his wand one last time and then he disappears and then a explosion comes up and welcoming the audience, indicating the name of the festival. I didn't want to add performers physically coming to perform because I wanted to showcase the performers around the wand to carry on with the theme of 'magic'.

My method was fairly simple, I would get the wand to move from right to left, get stars to appear and then the showcase of one of the performances will appear and it will repeat like this until the explosion. Here are some still shots of me moving the wand and allowing the stars to appear:

After this, the first thing I decided to show was some music symbols, here I added 3 symbols, appearing one by one, to carry on with the theme of magic and the whole idea of stuff appearing. This is a still shot of 2 of the symbols, before the 3rd symbol appears:

After the music notes, I wanted to showcase artist in some way. I had the idea to get a pen and make it draw a line or some sort of drawing. So I drew the final outcome of the drawing first and worked my way background by rubbing it off in each frame until it all appears, so it flows well. I was able to outline my last frame and make it flow by using the onion skin. This is a still shot of my pen drawing a squiggly line halfway through the animation:

I showcased a poet performer, through a scroll, I had another idea where I will get a paper and have some writing appear but I felt as if it will just copy the same format I did with the painting sequence, so a scroll opening seemed ideal. I was able to open the scroll properly by using the onion skin. These are 2 stills of the scroll being closed and opening halfway:

Of course, I wanted to add some juggling. I had an ideas to include an actual performer appearing and juggling but I felt as if that would ruin the theme that I had where objects just appear next to the wand, so I kept it like that where 3 balls would appear and just move around twice around a circle, as if they were juggling. These are still shots of how I moved the balls to somehow juggle and make it realistic. I also used the onion skin outline here:

I wanted to finish off my animation there, but it was only 20 seconds and I knew I needed to add more before I add the explosion bit I had planned as it would have only been under 30 seconds. So I decided to add different instruments that some performers could supposedly play, this was added the same way I did the music notes. Here is a still shot of the outcome:

Finally, I have added my performers, now I needed the magician to pull a 'trick' and make him self disappear and add smoke and in that bubble add the words ' Welcome to Progress Arts Weekend Festival ', At first I thought I'll continue the theme and add an explosion near the wand and make it grow until it turns in to the middle, but it didn't look nice and didn't flow as you can see the jump from the side to the middle. So I found an explosion on Vecteezy where it starts at the bottom and then the explosion appears. This was ideal and when I added it to my animation, in different frames it flowed very well and was the exact image I had in mind. During the production process, I have made sure that I use the times I have included, and try staying back to have extra time on the animation in order to get it done by the 14th February 2019. As a client I needed to make sure I understood the brief, made use of all the allocated times I gave myself, include extra time if I was able to, get feedback and correct it, before the deadline in order to produce and submit a strong animation for the festival.
